Trying to get in shape for summer, but the thought of the treadmill fills you with dread? The elliptical might be your answer.

Trying to find a way to make your elliptical workouts more effective, or simply wondering whether one of these funky-looking machines is worth your sweat? While the elliptical can be a fantastic workout, depending on how you use it, you may not be getting the most you can out of it. Here are a few tips, courtesy of myfitnesspal:
- It’s not just a funky-looking treadmill. It’s a great way to get all of your muscles working hard. Choose a machine that allows you to work your arms and legs at the same time so you can activate your abs, back and core
- Do intervals. Try starting off at a moderate pace for five minutes to warm up, then crank up the resistance and speed for 30 seconds followed by 60 seconds at the more moderate pace. Repeat this eight to ten times to make for a fast and effective workout
- Speed isn’t the only sweat factor. Use the incline feature to increase resistance if increasing speed is too much of a challenge
- A good workout is only as good as you make it. Don’t measure yourself against others in the gym or a recommended speed and resistance combination you read online. If you’re working hard enough that you can’t be having a conversation or reading the newspaper at the same time, you’re burning calories
Next time you’re in the gym, give it a try…you might surprise yourself!
