Mardi Gras Revelers Should Not Pour Pancake Mix Down Drains
Today is Mardi Gras and National Pancake Day. Many people will be making pancakes. The Daily Express says plumbers are warning people not to pour unused pancake mix down drains because it could lead to $400 property repairs.
One plumber says, “Pancake batter contains flour, fat and oil and this is a recipe for disaster when it comes to drains as it can quickly harden in pipes and lead to blockages and burst pipes which can be costly to repair. Pouring leftover pancake mix down the drain can also contribute to fatbergs in sewers. A fatberg is when fat and grease combine with unflushable items such as wet wipes and cotton buds. It’s really important that people are aware of the damage that pouring leftover batter down the drain can do to your home.”
Here is a great tip that will save you money by not calling in a plumber: If pancake batter does block a pipe, plumbers say the pipe should be flushed with white vinegar, baking soda, salt and boiling water.
