What Ranks as Jersey’s Most Popular Medical Drama?

There’s no flatline for medical dramas in the U.S. For decades these shows have had our hearts, and now we know what specific show gets each state’s heart beating the most.

The team at Grand Canyon University wanted to find out which medical drama series each state in the U.S. is clutching its heart to. GCU turned to Wikipedia’s list of medical drama television programs and analyzed Google Trends search volume from January 1, 2012, to January 1, 2022, for 80 shows under the medical drama category.

Here’s what they found:

  • General Hospital is the most popular medical drama in New Jersey.

  • Historically popular shows like Chicago Fire and ER were shut out, with zero states selecting those shows as their most popular medical drama.

  • General Hospital led the way, earning the title as most popular medical drama in four different states. Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina and Pennsylvania all chose General Hospital.

Interestingly, there was no home-field advantage for Grey’s Anatomy, which lost out to Combat Hospital as Washington’s favorite medical drama.
