Raw Cookie Dough Causing Salmonella Outbreak
We are coming upon the Easter holiday and I know many folks will be baking. I used to love when my mom baked because licking the dough off the bowl and the beaters was my favorite part of baking. As an adult, I still lick the bowl and beaters. I always thought it was the eggs that we need to be careful about when I heard the CDC talk about Salmonella, but it I just learned that there is more concern about the flour than there is concern about the eggs.
The NY Post says the Centers for Disease Control is warning people not to eat raw cookie dough because of a salmonella outbreak that has hospitalized three people.
The CDC released a statement saying, ”Flour doesn’t look like a raw food, but most flour is raw. This means that it hasn’t been treated to kill germs that cause food poisoning. Any raw (unbaked) flour used to make dough or batter can be contaminated with germs like Salmonella, but Salmonella germs are killed when flour is cooked or baked. You can get sick after eating or tasting raw dough or batter. Children can get sick from handling or eating raw dough used for crafts or play clay.”
I do not know about you, but I will take my chances and continue to lick the bowl and beaters – Maryann Morgan
