Are Our Digital Habits Literally Leaving Their Mark?
Our digital habits seem to be leaving their mark, literally. According to the New York Post, they are calling it the case of the “iPhone finger.” It appears that pressing down on the pinky while using our iPhones might be leaving behind a mark or indentation on our pinky finger. This topic was even discussed on “The TJ Show.” On the show they were speculating about the possibility of their pinkies bearing the signs of excessive smartphone use.
I do not want any of my fingers altered by my phone use. Obviously, this has been happening so often to people that it has been given the nickname “iPhone finger.” Our smartphones have a major impact on our lives. Many of us can not go longer than an hour without looking at social media or checking our emails. Do we really want to be so involved in our phones to the extent of permanently altering the structure of our pinkies?
A hand surgeon, Dr. Evans, is debunking the idea of our pinkies changing form. He says our smartphones may have a strong impact on our lives, but not to the extent of permanently altering the structure of our pinkies. Dr. Evans believes that even if our pinkies were changing form, it is unlikely that this will stop people from using our sleek touchscreen devices.
Consequences Our Digital Habits On Our Bodies
It seems our digital habits aren’t entirely without consequences though. Dr. Evans does warn us about “texting thumb.” He said, “your thumb joints aren’t made to text and swipe all day long.” He is warning us that overuse can aggravate conditions like arthritis or can even cause new problems in the thumb tendons.
There is also something else we need to be aware of due to out texting habits and it’s called “smartphone elbow.” This condition causes tingling or numbness in the pinky which is caused from bending the elbow beyond 90 degrees for extended periods. Basically we all bend our elbows when we text so we have to pay attention to the way we feel in various parts of our bodies. As our interest in technology grows, we need to be aware of the impact it may have on our body.
