Flushed With Embarrassment: Poop-xiety Is a Real Thing
I have to admit that the idea of pooping in front of someone makes me feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. It is not only true for a romantic partner, but for co-workers as well. I hate when I am in the ladies’ room at work and I hear the door open and someone else enters.
I usually hang out in the stall until they leave so they will not know it is me in the other stall.
The thought of someone else being aware of my bodily functions, particularly the smell, is extremely embarrassing to me. I do not know anyone who wants to be associated with that! I try to give the persona of being ‘put together’ and I feel pooping is not exactly the most glamorous persona I can put out there. It is all a part of being human, I know.
Because of the way I feel about the whole bathroom thing, I can totally understand why some people experience what experts are calling “poop-xiety.”
What is Poop-xiety?
According to the New York Post, poop-xiety is real because it is a mix of anxiety and awkwardness surrounding the idea of going to the bathroom in the presence of others. It’s exactly the way I said I feel like you want to maintain this façade of being perfect and put-together, but admit that you also have bodily functions that make you feel like you just shattered your image.
Let’s face it, at the end of the day, everyone does it. It’s a natural bodily function, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just a matter of getting comfortable enough with someone to let those walls down and embrace the fact that we are all human. Yes, that even includes pooping. I will try to feel better about not holding it in and doing what our bodies are meant to do. Until then, I’ll probably continue to suffer from a bit of “poop-xiety” too.
