Squirrels are the Newest Weapon Against Drugs
While most people want to get rid of squirrels because they see them as a nuisance, police in some parts of the world are training squirrels. Squirrels and other rodents are good at drug detection because they are very flexible so they can quickly climb up high places and pass through nooks and crannies in very tight spaces where dogs would not be able to reach. I can agree that squirrels are fast and can quickly climb from personal experience. One time a squirrel got into my house when I left the door open to carry in my groceries. My husband were chasing this thing as it quickly ran up and down and all around my four poster bed. It really was a comedy scene… it seems that the squirrel won the race that day!
It may sound nutty but, squirrels make excellent drug police because squirrels have an acute sense of smell. If you really want to be impressed, here is a fun fact about squirrels: a male squirrel can actually smell a female in heat, from up to a mile away! It seems as though squirrels are not the only animals aside from dogs that have ever been trained for drug sniffing. Pigs, mongoose, and even honey bees were trained for drugs sniffing. We will not see the squirrels at the airports making the big drug busts just yet, but when the trainers get them completely up to par, watch out!
