Health Dept Shuts Down Cicada Tacos
The Loudon County, Virginia Health Department told the Cocina on Market restaurant, in Leesburg, Virginia, to stop selling cicada tacos. Health Department officials say the restaurant was not getting the cicadas from an approved source. The restaurant now plans to serve Asian cicadas instead.
Chef Tobias Padovano says, “We were able to get them from an approved food source online. There’s a place in Dubai that raises cicadas for consumption. We were able to start using them to get cicadas in.”
Also, The FDA is warning people, who have seafood and shellfish allergies, not to eat cicadas. They tweeted: “We have to say it. Don’t eat #cicadas if you’re allergic to seafood as these insects share a family relation to shrimp and lobsters.”
Many people are making cicada tacos and cicada sushi.
