No Central AC? There Is A Better Way Than Window Units
If you live in a home that was built without central air conditioning, you may have thought that window units were your only option when it comes to battling the summer heat. A better, more permanent solution does exist, however, in the form of the ductless mini-split air conditioning system.
Unlike a conventional ducted central air conditioning system, a ductless mini-split system consists of an outdoor condensing unit and one or more indoor wall-mounted evaporator fan coils that are hung in the rooms you want conditioned. The system is minimally invasive as it only requires electric and the copper refrigerant tubing to be run between the outdoor and indoor units, rather than running ductwork throughout the home which would require opening ceilings and walls all over.
There are many advantages associated with a ductless mini-split system. From an energy efficiency standpoint, they are far superior to basic window units; about 30% in fact. Since each room has its own dedicated evaporator, customizing each room’s temperature has never been easier. The outdoor condenser can also run at partial capacity to save energy depending on how many indoor units are on or off, as opposed to a standard condenser that always runs at full capacity. On average, a standard system loses 30% of its cooling due to leaky, poorly insulated ductwork, which is a problem you obviously won’t have with a ductless system. The indoor units of a ductless system are typically whisper-quiet too, which is a nice added benefit.
Whether it’s retrofitting an older house or adding supplemental cooling to an addition, ductless mini-splits are definitely a great option to keep in mind for your next air conditioning project.
