A 250LB Female Bear Napping in a Tree in Carteret NJ
I grew up in Carteret, New Jersey and was wondering why my childhood friends were either posting pictures or videos of a bear in a tree yesterday. I was in shock to hear that a black bear was actually in a tree taking a nice nap. The bear was an adorable female weighing in at 250 pounds. The bear was first seen in Woodbridge which is the next town over from Carteret. Neither of these towns would be considered “living in the country”. Carteret is an industrial town with a lot of various types of businesses including Amazon. Carteret is also an easy town to catch a bus and get into the city. Maybe the bear came in by yacht and parked at the dock. LOL Very soon you will be able to catch the ferry from Carteret’s waterfront into the city. The ferry route from Carteret’s Waterfront Park, along the Arthur Kill to midtown, could transport passengers to the city in 54-minutes. As you can guess, Carteret is more city-like than anything, so a bear sighting is incredibly rare for residents.

I had to dig deeper into the story and find out where the bear was exactly. It first was seen on Carteret Avenue then made her way to Roosevelt Avenue by the C building in the Chrome section. The female black bear was captured on a Ring surveillance camera walking around the neighborhood. When residents noticed the bear the police were called. It was an exciting day to all residents who gathered around to watch. Of course you can watch a bear without bringing the cellphone cameras came out. Childhood friends of mine who still live there either took live videos for FB, or a ton of pictures. State wildlife officers shot three tranquilizers at her before finally subduing the bear. The bear unharmed, was later relocated to a suitable habitat. Even though I was not there at the time, I felt like I was a part of the day that residents will remember thanks to the Facebook postings from my childhood friends. What a truly exciting day. -Maryann Morgan
