Deer Takes a Leap: Rut Season Antics on New Jersey Roads

As the leaves begin to change and the crisp autumn air settles in, nature’s symphony takes center stage in the animal kingdom. Rut season, a time of fervent mating activity among deer, has arrived, and it brings with it some unexpected encounters. Recently, in Clifton, New Jersey, an astonishing incident unfolded that perfectly encapsulates the heightened activity of male deer during this season.

According to abc7.com on a Wednesday morning, just before 8 a.m., commuters on the southbound lanes of Route 21 were in for a wild surprise. A driver’s routine journey was rudely interrupted when a deer, seemingly out of nowhere, crashed through his windshield. The deer had taken a dramatic leap (or perhaps an unintended fall) from the Route 3 overpass, landing unceremoniously in the driver’s lap.

This unexpected rendezvous with a deer not only startled the driver but also triggered a chain reaction. The impact of the collision caused the driver to veer off course, colliding with a concrete barrier and subsequently crashing into another vehicle traveling in the same direction. Miraculously, the driver suffered only minor injuries in the midst of this chaotic event and was promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the deer did not share the same fate and succumbed to the injuries sustained from its daring leap.

While this story may seem unusual and even comical at first glance, it sheds light on the fascinating behavior of deer during rut season. Rut season, typically occurring in the fall, is the period when male deer, known as bucks, become highly active in their pursuit of mates. This increased activity often leads them to be more reckless, as they engage in territorial disputes and vigorously search for potential partners.

The incident in Clifton serves as a reminder of the importance of heightened awareness when driving in areas populated by deer. As rut season unfolds, drivers should exercise extra caution, especially during dawn and dusk when deer are most active. Vigilance behind the wheel can help prevent accidents like the one witnessed on Route 21.

The fall season is a glorious time in America. From coast to coast, many different areas off beautiful fall colors in radiant reds, oranges and yellows. So, what are the most beautiful spots in America for fall colors?

Peak fall foliage season is different based on where you are located. Some areas of the U.S. see fall colors as early as September, while others peak later on, such as in October or even November. Generally speaking, areas with longer winters will have earlies fall colors, and areas with longer summers will have later fall colors. If you’re wondering the science behind the fall colors, the color that the leaves become depends on a few factors. Those include the chlorophyll and weather conditions during the summer or fall. In general, big changes from the norm in precipitation, whether it’s getting way too much rain or not enough, can really impact the fall foliage season.

Also, I remember last year, the radiant colors in my area fell off the trees early. The reason was that we had a wind storm come through, so the leaves fell prematurely.
