Young Stars Shine Brightly for New York Mets and Yankees in Somerset Clash
The future was on full display for the Yankees and Mets in a clash of Double-A clubs at TD Bank Ballpark in Somerset as the Mets Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, held off the Yankees Double-A club, the Somerset Patriots 9-7.
Jasson Dominguez, the Yankees’ number-one rated prospect, and Ben Rice, both enjoyed three-hit days while driving in a pair. Meanwhile, Elijah Dunham had a huge night for Somerset, recording a pair of hits and three RBI. Dunham’s RBI double in the bottom of the first gave Somerset a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the newest members of the Mets shined in Somerset.
Drew Gilbert, whom the Mets acquired in the Justin Verlander trade, tallied three RBI on Tuesday. Two of those runs came in on a single in the top of the third inning that cut the Patriots lead in half at 4-2.
Gilbert drove in one more run on a Felder’s Choice in the eighth inning.

Moreover, Luisangel Acuna, whom the Mets got back in the Max Scherzer trade with Texas, had a single and walk, and scored twice in the Binghamton victory.
The Rumble Ponies found themselves behind 4-0 thanks to Ben Rice’s two-run double in the bottom of the third inning. That led to Drew Gilbert’s two-run double that sliced the Somerset lead in half.
Drew Gilbert continues his terrific start with the #Mets’ organization with a two-run single tonight.

Binghamton (Double-A) was down 4-0, but now lead 5-4.

J.T. Schwartz’s two-run triple plated Gilbert and Rowdey Jordan, tying the game at four. Binghamton took the lead with Jeremiah Jackson’s RBI single, scoring Schwartz.
Finally, home runs by Binghamton’s Hayden Senger and Jaylen Palmer put the game out of the reach of Somerset.
The Patriots drop to 18-15 in the second half, while Binghamton improves to 17-16. Things are getting interesting in the East as Somerset, Binghamton, and Portland are all separated by a single game for first place.
Somerset is in the playoffs after winning the first-half title, so to make the playoffs, Binghamton will likely need to win the second-half title.
