Interview with Miss New Jersey Candidate Nela Jimenez from Woodbridge
The Miss New Jersey Pageant happens this month and the voting is now open at MissNewJerseyUSA.com. Among the Miss New Jersey delegates you can cast your People’s Choice Award vote for is Dr. Manuela Jimenez Ed D.
“Nela” resides in Woodbridge, New Jersey, and attended Rowan University, Montclair State University, and Rutgers University.
The future Miss New Jersey hopeful is a dedicated educator focusing on English Language Arts from preschool through higher education and is a certified school Principal and Supervisor.
Nela’s commitment is addressing inequality in educational institutions and supports aspiring minority leaders of all genders ethnicities and sexual orientations to create a more inclusive educational system.
I caught up with Nela recently to talk about the Miss New Jersey competition, what she’s passionate about, and more.
Why Miss New Jersey?
My first question was why she is competing for Miss New Jersey. Nela shared, “I want to shed light on how it’s actually empowering for young ladies now, especially minoritized women in general, we’ve been underrepresented in fields of supervision and that stigma is that perhaps we’re not given the opportunity besides the intersectional identities we may have. Being black, being Latina, some individuals, women in the field also have disabilities. So that perpetuates the hindrances for them to mobilize their career.”
Dr. Jimenez said that when she started her research, “I actually realized that back the day women were expected to be beautiful and intelligent, so, in a sense, not only formally or having a college degree, but like their social etiquette, more well rounded. I want to bring that back with my leadership.”
She continued that she want to do this, “For more opportunities for girls, and especially minoritized ones with intersecting identities that present more hindrances for them. The reason this is crucial is because we have with the rise of technology and social media the wrong role models for these girls.”
