Team USA’s Women’s Soccer team dropped a devastating 3-0 loss to Sweden in the opening match of the Tokyo Olympics.
The New York Times notes, “The defeat was the Americans’ first in 24 games under Coach Vlatko Andonovski, and their first against any opponent since a loss to France in January 2019.”
The loss was also a deja vu moment for Team USA, who were eliminated from medal contention by Sweden at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Many were stunned by the loss and Team USA’s sloppy play during the match and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations and shock.
Rose Lavelle trying to break with the ball, holding her hands out beseechingly to everyone else like "where are you guys, what are you doing" kind of encapsulates the issues with the #USWNT right now #SWEvUSA— Steph Yang | Horrible Soccer Goose (@thrace) July 21, 2021
The referee blows the whistle and the #USWNT loses 3-0. Amazingly, it could've been even more lopsided.— Caitlin Murray (@caitlinmurr) July 21, 2021
The U.S. lost the first game of the 2008 Olympics and still won gold. I wouldn't count them out. But they need to play like themselves and not the team we just saw.
