Answer: Best New Grammy Award Winner
The Grammys have always been my favorite award show and the Best New Artist has always been my favorite Grammy award. Ever since Rickie Lee Jones won when I was a kid, I’ve always made my pick and rooted for them like my favorite sports team.
Rickie winning in ’79 was big because I loved her voice, and still listen to her debut album all the time. I loved all of the other nominees too, Dire Straits, The Knack, The Blues Brothers and one nominee I didn’t remember, Robin Williams! Maybe I was just rooting for the underdog, not sure.
I’m just a sucker for the Rickie-like smooth, jazzy singing and soft voiced female vocalists like Sheryl Crow, who beat out one of my all-time favorites, Green Day, for Best New Artist in ’94, Colbie Caillat (Grammy winner), Madeleine Peyroux etc. There’s something about those voices.
Ok, if you’ve read this far then you may want to know my pick for this year. I KNOW it’s going to be either Billie Eilish or Lizzo, I like them both and my gut says Lizzo, however, I’ll go with that voice again, Billie! We’ll find out on January 26th.
