Artists Have Mr. SquarePants To Thank For Noms
Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Plain White T’s and Cyndi Lauper are all nominated for the 2018 Tony Awards, thanks to their work on the soundtrack for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, based on the wildly popular cartoon, features a score written by a number of famous pop, rock and country stars. It received a leading 12 nominations for this year’s Tony Awards — tied with Mean Girls — and one of those nominations is for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre. If it wins, all the artists who wrote songs for the score will receive Tonys.
Sara’s contribution to the soundtrack is a song called “Poor Pirates.” Cyndi wrote “Hero Is My Middle Name,” while Plain White T’s contributed “BFF.” John Legend wrote “(I Guess) I Miss You.” Other artists who wrote songs for the score include Lady Antebellum, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, They Might Be Giants and Panic! At the Disco.
The 2018 Tony Awards, co-hosted by Bareilles and Josh Groban, air live Sunday, June 10 on CBS. For the full list of nominations, visit TonyAwards.com.
