If You’re Traveling, You Should Renew Your Passport if Needed
I do not know about you, but I always wait until the very last minute to go over my checklist before I plan on leaving for vacation. Sometimes that vacation includes a passport on my checklist. I usually just reach into my file cabinet and pull out my passport and throw it in my travel bag.
Recently my friend told me that he and his wife were planning to go on vacation and his wife never checked the expiration date on her passport before her trip. Guess what happened when she was at the airport?
You guessed it… she was denied the ability to board her flight. My friends never thought of checking their passport expiration date, but yes, all passports have one. I do not want that to happen to you so I felt the need to share their story.
If you plan to take that trip out of the country this summer, the U.S. Department of State suggests you renew your passport. The agency reports that, at this point, it will take 8 to 11 weeks for a regular renewal and 5 to 7 weeks for expedited renewal service.
Around this time of year, it’s not unusual for services to take longer. The U.S. Department of State tried to launch a passport renewal program online but was paused on February 7.
