Yonder Bluegrass Band’s New Album Coming
It was almost 20 years ago when a neighbor gave me a compilation CD from Paste Magazine. He had a couple of copies and thought I might like some of the new songs on it. He was right.
There were songs and artists on the album that I really enjoyed. One of the bands that had a song on the collection was The Yonder Mountain String Band, and the song was “How ‘Bout You?”
At the time, while I liked all types of music I didn’t listen to much bluegrass. So, you could say that the song raised my eyebrows regarding the genre. I thought it was a catchy and kind of hip and fun tune.
I casually followed the band through the years, they were nominated for a Grammy and I recently learned about a new album they’re releasing next month. I thought I’d revisit the song and check out their latest album.
The Yonder Mountain String Band is releasing their 11th studio album, Nowhere Next, on Friday, November 8. The title track has been described as “akin to a runaway freight train barreling down the tracks with no breaks as bassist Ben Kaufmann‘s monster groove lays the bedrock for stellar harmonies and deft instrumentals.
Road-tested in clubs nationwide during the band’s ambitious touring schedule, “Nowhere Next” transforms the 4½ minute song into an epic 30-minute improvised jam during live performances.”
Guitarist Adam Aijala said, “The reason the song exists is because of the bass ‘said no one ever’ in the world of bluegrass.” “We’re a bluegrass band with acoustic instruments playing a song that isn’t bluegrass at all but, I suppose that’s typical for us.”
Band members also include Dave Johnston (banjo, vocals), Nick Piccininni (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, vocals), and their newest member is Coleman Smith (fiddle).
