Maryann Gives Useful Information to Pick the Best Watermelon
The Fourth of July will be here and it’s time to think watermelon! Watermelon has always been a staple at my family BBQ’S in the summer. It wouldn’t officially be summer without one. You will find me and my family grabbing a slice and heading to the railing of the deck to spit our seeds. We even have contests on who can spit out our seeds the furthest.
There are so many watermelon recipes. I have grilled watermelon, made watermelon S’mores, watermelon salad, watermelon smoothies, and watermelon mimosas. There’s an art and science to picking the perfect watermelon.
How to Pick a Watermelon at the Grocery Store
- Pick it up: Big or small, the watermelon should feel heavy for its size.
- Look for the yellow spot: Watermelons develop a splotch where they rest on the ground. When this splotch is creamy yellow, it’s ripe.
- Give it a thump: Tap the underbelly of the watermelon. A ripe one will have a deep hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull.
So, a heavy watermelon with a splotch on it’s belly and a hollow sound means it’s brimming with juice. The juicier the better! Now that you have this useful information that you can take with you, carry on about your day!
