We all sing in the car, it’s not just me, is it? That’s pretty much what “Carpool Karaoke” is, it could have been called “James Corden Singing with Other Celebrities While Driving.” Jerry Seinfeld may have chosen something like that. Maybe not.
With “The Late Late Show with James Corden” ending, and the release of the final “Carpool Karaoke,” it got me thinking about which ones are my favorites.
I love the feature, especially when it’s with someone I really like. It gives you just a bit more insight into that person. For instance, the latest edition with Adele has a tear-jerking, honest, loving, conversation about friendship between James and Adele that you would never see during a normal “Late Late Show” interview.
The same holds true for a conversation between James and Paul McCartney about Corden’s granddad and dad’s love of the Beatles. James says, “If my grandad was here with me now he’d get an absolute kick out of it.” Then Paul says, “He is.” Both of them are speechless for a few seconds. I got chills when I watched it the first time, I got chills when I watched it the tenth time, and I’m getting chills thinking and writing about it right now. That would never happen if they were sitting at a desk in front of a studio audience.
I think that that may be the biggest reason I love the feature. You get to know these celebrities in a much more intimate way. Plus, anything that gives me chills, causes some tears, and evokes emotions that I don’t often experience, is something to be applauded for.
By the way, I realize that some or maybe all of them are staged. To the cynics I say, “Who cares?”
Here are my 7 favorites, in no particular order, that make me happy, make me laugh, surprise me, bring me to tears, make me feel good, or just have that “WOW” factor.
