Fox News reports that a Wisconsin primary school's spring musical was canceled when an administration claimed that Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton's "Rainbowland" was unacceptable and should not be performed by the young students.
First graders at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha were upset when the song was omitted from a concert setlist. The school also cut Kermit the Frog's "Rainbow Connection," a song that was popularized by The Muppet Movie.
Apparently, school officials took exception to the “Rainbow” reference in the Muppet song as well.
Superintendent Jim Sebert warned numerous reporters that the song could be problematic, he claimed the local school board's "conservative turn" led to regulations that tried to eradicate rainbow imagery that evokes LGBTQ+ themes and pulled the music from the playlist.
“Rainbowland” lyrics include, “Living in a Rainbowland, Where you and I go hand in hand together (let's do it together). Chase dreams forever, I know there's gonna be a greener land. We are rainbows, me and you. Every color, every hue. Let's shine on, together, we can start living in a Rainbowland”
Miley Cyrus commented on “Rainbowland” when it was released, "It's about all these different races and genders and religions if we all did come together to create and said, 'Hey, we're different, that's awesome, let's not change to be the same, but let's come together anyway.' Because a rainbow's not a rainbow without all the different colors.'"
