82-Year-Old Woman Arrested For Not Paying $77 Trash Bill
Residents of Valley, Alabama are outraged after an 82-year-old woman was arrested for not paying a $77 trash bill. . Court records show the Valley woman was arrested Sunday for not paying the garbage service bill that covered the months of June, July and August. A city official said the arrest came after multiple attempts to collect the bill and a history of suspended service. The city defended its actions in a Facebook post, claiming that she had ignored a court date and that officers had tried to contact her several times. The local police chief says the woman was “treated respectfully by our officers” and has been released on bond. She was charged with a misdemeanor offense of “failure to pay solid waste fees.” Court documents show the woman had a prior arrest for the same offense in 2006, over a $206 trash bill in 2006. The case was later dismissed “upon compliance,” court records showed.
