Potatoes Offer Weight Loss Benefits
Mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes are a staple at our family holiday gatherings. I don’t know about you, but I find there is so much you can do with a potato such as potato soup, potatoes au gratin, potato soup, or just an easy baked potato is a great side with meat or fish. I was so happy to come across this study!
A new study by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center reveals that eating potatoes may have weight-loss benefits. Researchers discovered that even though potatoes are rich in carbohydrates, they can help people shed pounds because they make them feel “full” more quickly than other foods. This dissuades people from filling up on more high-calorie foods. However, eating fried potatoes, including chips, does not offer the same benefit.
Study co-author Candida Rebello says, “People tend to eat the same weight of food, regardless of calorie content in order to feel full. By eating foods with a heavier weight that are low in calories, you can easily reduce the number of calories you consume. The key aspect of our study is that we did not reduce the portion size of meals, but lowered their caloric content by including potatoes … By replacing some meat content with potato, participants found themselves fuller, quicker, and often did not even finish their meal. In effect, you can lose weight with little effort.”
