Restaurant Owner Hires Fake Priest to Get Employees to Confess Workplace Sins
It doesn’t happen often, but every caller agreed how crazy awful this is, not one listener thought it was a nice thing to do. Shocking! Employers have done some terrible, immoral things, but this one is mind-boggling. I’ve had insecure, sneaky, and selfish jerk bosses in my work life, but this guy beats them all.
This has got to be one of the most sacrilegious acts, and most likely has earned this guy a one-way ticket to hell. According to an investigation by the United States Department of Labor, the owners of a California taqueria chain have been ordered to pay Seventy thousand dollars in damages to employees who were tricked into confessing their workplace sins to a person posing as a priest.
According to the department’s press release, The “confessions” focused solely on job-related wrongdoings, catching the attention of the US Department of Labor during an investigation into unpaid wages. “An employee told the court the “priest” urged workers to ‘get the sins out’ and asked them if they had stolen from the employer, been late for work, had done anything to harm their employer, or if they had bad intentions toward their employer.”
“Ultimately, the employer agreed to a consent judgment, and Judge William B. Shubb in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California ordered Che Garibaldi and owners and operators Eduardo Hernandez, Hector Manual Martinez Galindo and Alejandro Rodriguez to pay $140,000 in back wages and damages to 35 employees. Che Garibaldi Inc. operates two Taqueria Garibaldi restaurants in Sacramento and one in Roseville.”
In addition to the damages, the owner must pay seventy thousand in back pay and five thousand in civil money penalties for willful violations. The owner also threatened employees and fired a worker who complained. The Department of Labor condemned the employer’s attempts to silence workers and obstruct justice.
