Store Manager Fired for Saving Company A Lot of Money
We got mixed responses when it was discussed on Joel and Maryann in the Morning. We received a whole plethora of varied opinions about who was wrong here, the employee or the company.
You decide, here are the deets…
A Big Lots manager is asking for help after she was fired for trying to retrieve one of the store’s shopping carts.
Lily Oxford, (pictured below with her family) who is now a former manager at one of the Big Lots retail stores said on her GoFundMe page, “I was fired from Big Lots yesterday for following a thief outside to recover my cart and 17 things of Tide pods.”
Oxford went on to say “This homeless man walked in loaded his cart and walked out, I followed him to get my cart and noticed he was going to a car I then pulled out my phone and began recording, the getaway driver seen I was recording and got scared and literally made the thief give me all of the product back!”
She went on to say that she really thought that she did a good thing by recovering the product but instead, she was fired.”
Oxford, who is “a single mom of 2 teenagers,” said she started the GoFundMe to help with rent while she waits for unemployment and continued to fill out applications.
Apparently, the company has a policy against chasing after alleged thieves. This could be insurance-related or simply a fear of being sued if someone is injured or, even worse, killed.
Most of those who commented felt that she did the right thing and that the company should be thanking her and not firing her. However, there were a few that felt that she should have followed the company policy and that they have rules for a reason.
A man named Ronald donated $100, and wrote, “Sorry to hear about your job loss. Wishing you and your family good luck!” “Jason” gave $20 and wrote, “Screw Big Lots.”
Her GoFundMe page has a goal of $2500.
