N.J. Water Main Break: How Long For Full Service?
Perhaps like many New Jersey residents you awoke to a chilly Saturday morning (Oct. 8) from a blaring alarm warning you that the water in your county had been compromised. A water main break affected three New Jersey counties over the weekend. Many residents still do not have full service despite the leak being sealed.
“The leak in the affected pipe has been located and has been sealed,” said William J. Maer, a spokesman for the Wanaque based North Jersey District Water Supply Commission, per NJ Advance Media. “The agency is now in the process of working toward restoring full water supply to the municipalities affected.”
The outlet reports that a “72-inch water main that serves the Commission’s territory was reported broken in Nutley on Wednesday, and a smaller main controlled by Newark Water Supply was also affected,” officials said.
So how long may you have to wait?
Residents of those communities will have to wait anywhere between 24 and 48 hours before full service is restored, he said.
“This process includes testing of the lines and the extensive monitoring and treatment of the water supply,” Maer said.
Newark warned residents that some may experience low water pressure or no water available at all.
Bloomfield issued a boil water advisory to residents: “Due to a water main break on the City of Newark supply line, which required the City of Newark to shut down their supply lines to Bloomfield yesterday at 10 PM, the township is under a boil water advisory,” the Bloomfield township official site stated.
“Where water pressure or service is either low or non-existent, water systems are required to sample and re-sample the water to verify that bacterial contaminants, such as e-coli, have not been introduced into the potable water system.”
