Anna Kendrick Donates Movie Profit To Victims of Domestic Violence
Anna Kendrick’s directorial film Woman of the Hour is Netflix’s top 1 movie in the US for two consecutive weeks, captivating audiences with its chilly reimagining of the true story of “The Dating Game Killer.” The crime thriller follows the story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, who appeared on the television show The Dating Game in the 1970s while actively committing heinous crimes against women he meets.
Kendrick plays Sheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress and contestant on The Dating Game who ended up choosing Alcala, played by Daniel Zovatto, unaware of his dark and murderous double life. The film managed to show the tension and horror of the victims, offering a glimpse of how Alcala manipulated those around him.
The film currently has a 90% rating at Rotten Tomatoes and Kendrick helming the movie earned her a spot in Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch for in 2024.
Fans Praised Anna Kendrick
Kendrick admitted she made no money from her acting and directing Woman of the Hour since she donated all of it to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime. According to her Crime Junkie AF podcast appearance and as published by BBC, Kendrick said, “This was never a money-making venture for me. All the resources went to actually just making the movie.” She added, “I sort of asked myself the question: ‘Do you feel gross about this?’ and I did. So, yeah, I’m not making money off of the movie.”
Per Independent, fans on X (previously Twitter) have been applauding Kendrick’s decision to donate her profits from the film. As one fan tweeted, “THIS is the kind of behaviour we need from celebrities who choose to deal with delicate/traumatic storylines.” Kendrick, as she has shared before, was also a victim of domestic violence.
NCVC and RAINN donation
NCVC and RAINN both confirmed Kendricks’s donation. In statements sent to Yahoo! Entertainment, a spokesperson for NCVC said they were “excited to learn about Anna’s gift, both to our organization and our friends at RAINN, and humbled by her support.” RAINN also sent their statement, “We’re so grateful to Anna Kendrick for her support of RAINN and all survivors, and for being a compassionate storyteller when it comes to raising awareness of sexual violence.”
