Keon Coleman Is The New NFL Personality We Didn’t Know We Needed
The long-anticipated 2024 NFL draft is now behind us. Among many of the big stories coming out of Detroit, there’s an unexpected and lighthearted one, where new Buffalo Bills receiver Keon Coleman has immediately won over fans with his engaging personality.
Before we recognize Coleman’s many hilarious moments from the past 10 days, let’s put some perspective on his overall situation. Coleman was selected 33rd overall and in the second round of the draft. To many, including this star out of Florida State, this was a surprise. Coleman was expected to be a late first-round pick. Yet, many of the first comments and press pieces we’ve seen from Coleman after being drafted late by Buffalo do not show him being angry or disappointed. He’s cheerful and grateful for the opportunity. Moreover, he is downright hilarious.
Is Buffalo Bills Receiver Keon Coleman Already The Funniest Person In The NFL?
We’ve seen jokesters at the receiver position before. Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson immediately comes to mind. Like Ocho, Coleman is naturally charismatic. And the Bills mafia is certainly taking to this. Late last week, it was reported that Bills fans had already donated over $160,000 to a Louisiana charity that Coleman supports called Hope for Opelousas, which supports local youth programs.
It’s fair to think that the passionate Bills fanbase would make generous donations regardless of personality, but Coleman’s personality as he was introduced to his new hometown certainly helped.
Wearing a big yellow winter jacket, at his introductory press conference Coleman said he got the coat at Macys for, “Seventy-nine, 89, nice little deal.” He then spent a moment explaining how he looks for bargains. Sports Illustrated shared the commentary, “I shop like my mom. I get my coats in the summertime. You got to shop a season or two before, just in case, and they’ll be cheaper,” Coleman said.
A few days later video clips were shared of Coleman first meeting some of the Buffalo Bills front office and coaching staff. Again, his natural personality came out right away. Upon being asked what he likes to do outside of football, Coleman mentioned golf, then delivered a class follow-up. “I’m Tiger-wish-he-could, I’m not Tiger Woods,” Coleman delivered brilliants to an outpouring of laughter. The clips went viral shortly afterwards.
Later this week the Buffalo Bills will hold OTA rookie mini camps. Fans are expected to get a glimpse of Coleman sporting the team colors for the first time. However, it’s a moment he is well-prepared for. Bills Wire explained how, upon being drafted, Coleman texted Andre Reed, arguably the most renowned receiver in Bills franchise history. Year prior though, Coleman was preparing for this opportunity in ways that not many others have.
Growing up in Louisiana, Coleman had opportunities to play college football closer to home and in the warmer southern weather. Being up north in Michigan would allow Coleman to be acclimated to all weather conditions, learn from experienced coaches, and refine his game. He had it all planned out where he would improve and endure different conditions up north and then return south to finish his college career.
That’s exactly what happened. Coleman then spent his final college football season at Florida State, where he amassed 50 catches and 11 touchdowns.
Now, Coleman will play in one of the harshest weather markets in the NFL. With Josh Allen throwing him passes, his college cold-weather experience, and engaging personality, Coleman will be just fine. Fans will be loving what he does on the field, and what he says off the field.
