Many Believe Hot Bedding Will Become a Hot Trend in New Jersey
If you’ve never heard of this get ready to either say, “No way I would ever do that,” or “That’s actually a great idea.” In my quick limited non-scientific survey of folks around the radio station and at home with family members, these seem to be generally the two main reactions when learning about what “Hot-bedding” is and how it works. However, it’s something that I’m convinced will become very popular in New Jersey, New York, and many highly populated areas throughout the United States.
So what is it? It’s a practice that was recently reported by news.com.au.
“Hot-bedding” is something that two people do, usually two strangers, to save money on rent. Instead of sharing a room or an apartment, they take turns using a bed or bedroom at different times of the day when it’s available. Obviously, this is something that only works if both parties have completely different schedules. It’s a creative solution for people who can’t afford the rising rent costs being reported in Australia.
This has become very popular with international students staying down under. “It may seem strange, but it is the reality for hundreds if not thousands of international students in Australia. And there are fears more could find themselves in these bed-sharing arrangements.” In addition to “hot-bedding” some students skip meals and find other non-traditional ways to save money during financial struggles. While it’s something that makes sense financially, as you can imagine, it can be a very stressful and difficult living situation for those who participate in it.
My friend Gary said, “I suppose it would be fine if I really needed to save money, but I would have to make sure the other person was very serious about their hygiene.” Others said things like, “no,” or that they would have to be completely desperate to try something like that.
Either way, with rising rents everywhere, and students everywhere, this is bound to be something that is practiced by at least a small percentage of New Jerseyans in the future, if it’s not being done already.
This is nothing new, “Hot-bedding,” “Hot-racking,” or “Hot-bunking” has been practiced for some time in order to reduce sleeping space in the military.
