John Cusack shared a meme of a large hand with a Star of David on it, oppressing a group of people, The Washington Post reports. The image, which has now been deleted, was accompanied by the caption “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.”
The quote, which is often attributed to French philosopher Voltaire, is actually from white nationalist Kevin Strom.
Cusack retweeted the image, adding “follow the money” before deleting the post.
While he originally blamed a Twitter bot for hacking his account, Cusack later apologized for “mistakenly retweeting an alt-right account.”
“It’s clear that even if it was Israel’s flag and even if you don’t have an anti-Semitic bone in your body, it’s still an anti-Semitic cartoon,” he wrote. “Because it deploys anti-Jewish stereotypes.”
