Gypsy Rose Reveals Plan To Explain Mother’s Death To Daughter
Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been thinking about a conversation she’ll probably have with her unborn child regarding her mother’s death. In a recent interview, she talked about how she plans to address it.
Blanchard was released from prison less than a year ago for her involvement in the killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. In June 2015, Gypsy’s then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, stabbed Dee Dee to death after they planned it together. Dee Dee had subjected Gypsy to years of medical treatments for illnesses she did not have. Gypsy waited in the bathroom while Godejohn killed her mother in the next room. It’s widely believed that Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare form of abuse where a caregiver exaggerates or causes illness in a child for attention. Gypsy served eight years of a ten-year sentence for her role in the death and was released in December 2023.
When Gypsy Rose got out of prison, she was married to Ryan Anderson, but in March of this year, she announced their separation. Shortly after, she was seen enjoying a friendly outing in New Orleans with her ex-fiancé, Ken Urker. Their relationship quickly progressed from getting matching husky tattoos to dating, and soon, they discovered they were expecting their first child, a daughter.
On Oct. 16, during an appearance on The Viall Files show, Gypsy Rose talked about how she would explain her mother’s death to her daughter. She shared that she often thinks about “what could have been” if her mother had a relationship with her child. “For me, it is heartbreaking…,” she said. Gypsy also mentioned that her stepmother, Kristy Blanchard, will be the grandmother to her daughter.
She added, “So, I kind of put that in the back of my mind. And so, I mean, there have been questions on social media. Everybody asks, you know, ‘What are you gonna tell your daughter whenever grandma isn’t around?’ My response to them is that Kristy has become more of a mother to me than my own mother was.”
Gypsy Rose did not specify at what age she would explain what happened to Dee Dee, but she said that the conversation would involve Ken Urker, her dad, and stepmother. “We’re going to explain things in a way that’s not overwhelming, but enough so she understands where my life was at that time and how I got there. Because obviously, I didn’t get there overnight,” Gypsy explained.
Gypsy also mentioned that her daughter could “read [what happened] for herself,” referring to her memoir. She wants her daughter to see that she’s “not a monster” and is open to her daughter watching documentaries about her life when she is old enough.
When asked about the relationship her late mother, Dee Dee, might have had with her baby, Gypsy said, “I mean, for me, it is heartbreaking because I do, from time to time, think about what could have been, and it makes me sad.”
In January, she spoke with PEOPLE for an upcoming cover story about the deep feelings of regret and forgiveness she now experiences. “If I had another chance to redo everything, I don’t know if I would go back to when I was a child and tell my aunts and uncles that I’m not sick and mommy makes me sick,” Gypsy shared. “Or, if I would travel back to just the point of that conversation with Nick and tell him, ‘You know what, I’m going to go tell the police everything.’ I kind of struggle with that.”
She added, “Nobody will ever hear me say I’m glad she’s dead or I’m proud of what I did. I regret it every single day.”
