Brett’s Top 3 Movies – Just in Time for the Oscars!
So, who else has yet to see Ladybird, The Shape of Water, Call Me by Your Name and the many other Oscar nominees? I’m terrible when it comes to getting out and seeing movies in theaters. For a second, I thought the last one I actually saw in a movie theater, complete with a tub of buttery popcorn and sticky floors, was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Fortunately, I remember seeing a not-so-memorable movie in the last year. (I honestly can’t remember what it was!) Needless to say, I have to work on staying up-to-date with the new movies coming out of Hollywood.
With that in mind, if I had to run down my top 3 movies of all time, they would have to be:
Titanic
As a child of the 90s, it’s almost impossible not to be in love with this movie, even 20 years later. Since I was 6 when it was released, my parents (correctly) thought that some of the scenes were a bit too “intense” (cough, cough) for me. But, once I first saw it a few years later when it made its network TV debut, I fell in love with the classic love story of Rose and Jack, the amazing acting and freakishly convincing set and special effects. On top of that, the score and soundtrack, including Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” will immediately bring me back to that movie. While it definitely has its moments that make you think, “That would never have happened in real life,” the stark reality of the narrative “I’ll never let go!”
The Sound of Music
When I was younger, my first Broadway show was the classic The Sound of Music. After enjoying the play so much, I knew I had to see the movie. As engaging as it was to see the live performance, Julie Andrews’ impeccable performance as Maria von Trapp, singing among the mountains and teaching the children to fall in love with music and rekindle a relationship with their father just left me speechless. The performance of “Edelweiss” always moves me to no end – as does interweaving such a gut-wrenching period in world history into the story line. It is extremely organic and inexplicably real. And besides, who can help but sing along with pretty much every song?!

Love Actually
If you happened to catch my blogs at Christmastime, you definitely won’t be surprised to find this one on the list. And as much as I wanted to choose another one and not repeat it in this list, I just couldn’t! The mix of comedy, romance and drama – along with it all taking place around my favorite time of the year – just make this a movie I will never pass up watching when it’s on TV. The combination of the joyous, the sad, the hopeful and the sentimental just make this all too real and extremely relatable. But I think what makes it most special for me is that it’s one of those movies that I will purposely take time out of my day or night to watch. (Who can say they actually sit through 2-hour movies on a regular basis anymore?) To me, Love Actually is perfect!
While I probably won’t be watching the Oscars this Sunday night, chances are, if I’m in my apartment, I’ll be watching one of these movies!
