Shawn Mendes: Still ‘Figuring Out’ His Sexuality
At a concert in Colorado on Monday night, Shawn Mendes spoke frankly to his audience about his sexuality.
“Since I was really young, there’s been this thing about my sexuality,” he said. “And people have been talking about it for so long. I think it’s kind of silly, because I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes.”
He added, “It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me, something that I was figuring out in myself, something that I had yet to discover, and still have yet to discover…The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes, and I know other times. And it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that. I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things. And that’s all I really want to say about that for now.”
Fans, of course, discussed the moment on X, formerly Twitter. One person wrote, “I couldn’t imagine navigating this as a public figure who has been derided for years about something so personal. The honesty and bravery is astounding.” Another said, “Shawn Mendes, You made me cry. I applaud you for being so vulnerable. Figuring out your sexuality is deeply personal, & sharing this with the world is incredibly brave. You are loved exactly as you are. Take your time, be kind to yourself, & know we all support you.”
Another commenter shared, “I love shawn mendes and I hope everyone will leave him in peace now. Harassing someone since they were 15 over something so private is actually insane, people left and right trying to tell him what he is. leave that man alone.” And one person said, “i have never seen someone get as much sexual harassment on the internet as shawn mendes.”
Mendes was in a long relationship with Camila Cabello, although they split up in 2021. Mendes has since postponed and then canceled a tour to tend to his mental health.
Earlier this year, he and Cabello got back together but it didn’t last. Cabello talked about the end of their relationship on the Call Her Daddy podcast earlier this year.
