Britney Spears Teases Character In Fictional Musical, Not Biopic
Britney Spears is hinting at her next project, but it’s not the biopic many are hoping for. On Friday (Aug. 30), the singer shared a cryptic message on social media amid speculation that Emma Roberts might star in a biopic adaptation of Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me.
“The project I might be doing isn’t a biopic story … it’s a fictional musical where I play an extremely intelligent character !!!,” Spears wrote on Instagram, accompanied by an illustration of a girl hovering above a pair of cats. She added, “It’s flattering to be in such good company like Jon Chu !!!”
Comments on Spears’ post are disabled, but fans have turned to Reddit to discuss the news. One user commented, “She was like ‘Yes……………………….It is NOT getting made!’” Another added, “Honestly, a Britney biopic would be the wildest ride ever.”
Universal Pictures has reportedly acquired the rights to adapt The Woman in Me, which chronicles Spears’ rise to fame, her relationship with Justin Timberlake—including a pregnancy and abortion—and her 13-year conservatorship.
According to Variety, Wicked director Jon M. Chu and Marc Platt are leading the film’s development. Spears also Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥
“Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned,” Spears posted.
In a recent Cosmopolitan interview, Roberts discussed the possibility of playing Spears in the biopic, a suggestion made by Spears’ longtime assistant, Felicia Culotta.
“I was like, I love her assistant. I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears,” Roberts said, reflecting on Culotta’s comments and her own memories of memorizing lyrics from In the Zone.
“It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to [2003’s] In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word,’” Roberts said.
While Spears’ longtime assistant is all for Roberts portraying the singer in a biopic, some people thought the complete opposite. Someone took to social media and said, “Please don’t let this happen.” Another person had some deep feelings writing, “Emma Robert’s would destroy this film. There’s no way it wouldn’t look like Emma Robert’s cosplaying as Britney Spears.” One person jokingly wrote, “Where’s that iconic Michael Scott GiF when you need it? ‘Noooooooooooooooo!’”
No casting or release dates have been announced for the project yet.
