Billy Joel’s hit song “We Didn’t Start The Fire” has been updated in a most awesome way by Patrick Stump and Fall Out Boy. While Billy’s song covered current events from 1949 to 1989, the new version is not only somewhat of a cover, but it also recounts the years 1989 to the present day 2023.
Here are some examples of the modernized lyrics. Billy’s version made mention of many icons who had passed away like Buddy Holly, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley. Fall Out Boy mentions Kurt Cobain, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson, and Blink 182’s lead singer Tom DeLonge. The new song also references a number of political figures and world events, including 9/11, Columbine, Donald Trump and “Bush v Gore.”
What is very interesting is that both versions mention Egypt’s Suez Canal. Billy Joel sang, “Trouble in the Suez,” in reference to the 1956 Suez Crisis, while Fall Out Boy’s rendition goes “Ever Given Suez,” referring to the ship that infamously got stuck in the canal in 2021.
Fall Out Boy said on Facebook “I thought about this song a lot when I was younger. All these important people and events- some that disappeared into the sands of time- others that changed the world forever. So much has happened in the span of the last 34 years- we felt like a little system update might be fun. Hope you like our take on it.”

Kelly Clarkson 'Chemistry': 5 Best Songs and 5 Skips
Kelly Clarkson’s tenth studio album, Chemistry, is out today (June 23). With 14 songs about her past relationship with her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, the singer-songwriter laid it all out on the line. Back in March, she said she didn’t want “everybody” to think that her emotions could just be simplified as angry or sad. Clarkson explained in a video shared on Twitter, “This album is definitely the arc of an entire relationship, and a whole relationship shouldn’t be just brought down to one thing. So there’s the good, the bad, the ugly thing kinda going on in it.”
After working on the album for three years, and debating on whether or not to release it, the talk show host said the album “can be a really amazing sexy, cool, fun thing, but it can also be very bad for you.” While performing a preview of her album last month at a Los Angeles concert in celebration of her 41st birthday, the musician struggled with her emotions. Telling EW at the time that the emotions “murdered” her, even having to pause and apologize to the crowd after feeling overwhelmed. She said those feelings were “just like a wave washed over me.”
Celebrating the release of Chemistry, Clarkson took to Twitter Friday. “the wait is finally over! my new album #chemistry is available everywhere now. i hope y’all enjoy it!”
She will also be heading to Las Vegas for a 10-show residency starting July 28. The dates are July: 28 and 29 and August 2, 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19. In preparation for the emotions that will inevitably come up during the performances, Clarkson had to previously adapt to tread lightly. She told EW, “It just takes time to… not really separate, but to get to where you can remember it but you don’t drown in it. You dive in, but you’re treading water.”
