Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling May Star in ‘Ocean’s 11’ Prequel
Barbie producer Josey McNamara is teasing a Ocean’s Eleven prequel. It will reunite Barbie co-stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as stars in the Jay Roach-directed film. He previously directed Robbie in her Best Supporting Actress Oscar-nominated role in 2019’s Bombshell. Roach also directed the Austin Powers film franchise, Meet the Parents, and the sequel, Meet the Fockers. Steven Soderbergh set the bar high for the original 2001 Ocean’s Eleven. That film starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, the late Bernie Mac, and more. The sequel, Ocean’s Twelve, followed in 2004, with Ocean’s Thirteen ending the trilogy in 2007. Eleven years later, Ocean’s 8 starred a female-centric cast. That included Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkafina, Helena Bonham Carter, and Rihanna. The newest Ocean’s release did the least well at the box office globally, making $297.8 million. Oceans’s Eleven made $450.7 million.
While attending the BFI London Film Festival, McNamara told Games Radar of Gosling and Robbie, “They’re wonderful together. The more projects, even outside of that, we can have them do would be amazing.” Regarding the premise of the untitled prequel, McNamara kept tight-lipped about any other details. He did state that it would “do right by the franchise.” McNamara expressed his excitement for people to experience it when it’s ready. Per Deadline, the film has been in “active development” since last year, with Carrie Solomon penning the prequel. Robbie and her husband, English film producer and actor, Tom Ackerly will produce for LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside Roach and Michelle Graham for Everyman Pictures.

According to Collider, the film will be set in Monte Carlo in 1962. The prequel is an “old-fashioned epic love story slash adventure disguised as a heist movie,” reveals Roach. The director, along with Robbie, is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief (1955) and Notorious (1946) for the project. Robbie and Gosling have already starred in the highest-grossing film of their entire acting careers with Barbie together. Barbie has made nearly $1.5 billion worldwide!
