Halle Berry’s Child Support Payments Halved: Claimed Extortion
Halle Berry’s child support payments to ex-husband Gabriel Aubry have been halved after she renegotiated the terms of their custody agreement in court, Page Six reports.
The duo, who are a decade apart in age with Berry at 54 and Aubrey at 44, share 13-year-old daughter Nahla. They began dating in 2006 and welcomed their child two years later. In 2010, the pair separated with reports at the time suggesting it was due to their age gap.
The new terms come after Berry branded child support payments as “extortion” on a social media post and claimed the rules were “outdated.” In an apparent attempt to throw shade at Aubry, Berry shared a meme on Instagram reading, “women don’t owe you s—.” This garnered a lot of comments from her followers, so Berry responded — without mentioning Aubry by name saying, “it takes great strength eryday to pay it. and BTW it’s wrong and it’s extortion !”
In response to one user asking “do you believe that men paying alimony and support is wrong? And is extortion?” Berry said that she has never asked for alimony, but as for child support, “I’ve been paying it for a decade now. I feel if a woman or man is having to pay support that is way more than the reasonable needs to help SUPPORT the child, I think that is wrong !”
In the same response, Berry explains she feels that many laws are set up for people to “USE children in order to be awarded money to live a lifestyle that not only did they not earn, but that is way above and beyond the child’s reasonable needs and that is ‘THE WRONG’ and where i see the abuse.” Berry went on to brand child support laws as “outdated” and “no longer reflect the modern world.”
Per Page Six, the actress was initially ordered to pay $16,000 a month to Aubry in 2014 in child support. After getting her renegotiation approved, she will now pay about $8,000 a month in an arrangement which went into effect at the start of this month. In addition, Berry will also give Gabriel a retroactive support payment of $85,000 and will pay his legal fees of $5,000. The terms lay out that she will continue to pay for Nahla’s private school tuition and her health insurance, and if her annual income exceeds $1.95 million in any given year, she must hand over additional child support to Aubry.
The former couple have agreed to settle all future disputes with a private judge to avoid going through the court system.
