On stage during the Miss Universe contest, Zozibini talked about diversity and beauty, saying, “Society has been programmed for a very long time that never saw beauty in a way that was black girl magic, but now we are slowing moving to a time where women like myself can finally find a place in society, can finally know they’re beautiful.”
Runners up were Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Mexico.
Social media was on fire after the show, primarily because host Steve Harvey mixed up contestants. When announcing the costume contest, he confused Miss Philippines and Miss Malaysia. According to Entertainment Weekly, Steve announced Miss Philippines as the winner but implied that it was Miss Malaysia, who was standing next to him.
Afterward, Miss Malaysia tried to correct Steve about who won. She took the mic and said, “It’s not Philippines, it’s Malaysia.” Steve quickly defended himself, saying, “Okay, well, let me explain something to you. I just read that in the teleprompter. Y’all got to quit doing this to me. I can read, they said now, they’re trying to fix it now. See, this what they did to me back in 2015. Played me short like that. This is Malaysia. I really love this national costume of Malaysia. This is crazy.”

Later, the Miss Universe organization defended Harvey, saying that he was correct in saying Miss Philippines won. Entertainment Weekly adds, ” Miss Malaysia wasn’t aware that Miss Philippines would be announced first and ‘jumped the gun’ when Harvey started with that news.” The Miss Universe organization also confirmed the winner on Twitter.
