Number 1 Reason We Wake Up in the Middle of the Night Not What You Think
With nearly 70% of people in New Jersey on social media and in the habit of constant scrolling, quality sleep has become a big concern. 39% of Americans are struggling to sleep so MattressNextDay has created a sleep report, to delve deeper into our sleep hygiene habits.
The report has interesting findings about sleep duration, bedtime routines, technology usage, and partner dynamics, along with other critical aspects that impact sleep quality.
10 Years Ago 8 Hours of Sleep was the Minimum Recommendation…Now it’s 7
The report reveals that Americans are averaging between six to seven hours of sleep per night. So, what are some of the factors that lead to our sleep patterns?
The report says that 22% of Americans prefer an early bedtime between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on weeknights. The survey reveals how often we wake up throughout the night. Fifty percent of respondents shared that waking up once or twice during the night is a common occurrence. The majority of them are taking about 13 minutes to fall back asleep.
The Reasons We Wake Up
“Being thirsty” ranked as the top reason for waking up at night, with 36% of people affected by nighttime dehydration.
The second most common reason for waking up, affecting 32% of Americans, was being too hot. The third reason was people being disturbed by bad dreams.
So, thirst, heat, and nightmares are the main reasons we don’t sleep through the night.
While sleep experts suggest no caffeine and screens prior to bedtime, the report finds a substantial 34% of participants admit to consuming caffeine right before bed, while 68% confess to using electronic devices up to an hour before sleep. It’s recommended that we turn off all screens at least an hour before bed, and never look at them if we wake up in the middle of the night.
The report finds that 57% of us watch TV or movies before bed, while 23% read a book or listen to music.
MattressNextDay CEO Marting Seeley commented, “A solid night’s sleep is like your secret weapon for a fantastic day ahead. It’s your body’s way of saying ‘I’ve got your back,’ helping you wake up refreshed, sharp, and ready to take on the day.”
