First Time Ever Event Happening Next Month in Jersey
We all know that the most common conversation at Easter gatherings was about what to do with all the unwanted or expired boat flares. Now, there’s an answer. Ocean County is holding its first-ever boat flare disposal event.
Boat flares are signaling devices used on boats to indicate distress or emergency situations. They are typically pyrotechnic devices that emit a bright light, smoke, or both, and are classified into several types, each with its own specific use and characteristics.
The most common types of boat flares include hand-held flares, parachute flares, rocket flares, and smoke flares. Hand-held flares are small and easy to handle and have a glow that can be seen from a far distance. Parachute flares are fired into the sky and release a parachute, which then burns and glows brightly.
Rocket flares are similar to parachute flares, but they are designed to reach a greater height and emit a brighter light. Smoke flares, on the other hand, do not emit light, but instead produce a thick plume of smoke, which can be seen from far away and used to indicate a boat’s location.
Boat flares are an essential part of a boat’s safety equipment and are used to attract attention and alert nearby vessels or rescue services in case of an emergency or distress situation. It is important to follow the instructions and guidelines for using flares, as they can be dangerous if not handled properly.
According to Lavalette-Seaside Shorebeat, Ocean County, New Jersey is having its first-ever boat flare disposal event. They share that “Neither local recycling centers, fire companies, nor the county’s U.S. Coast Guard stations accept flares for disposal. This year, however, Ocean County is providing a rare opportunity for disposal.” They also reported that “The disposal program will take place May 6, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ocean County Fire Training Center, 200 Volunteer Way, in Waretown.” You can register here.
