Claudette Barius/ 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. TM & © DC Comics“You know what a harlequin is? A harlequin’s role is to serve. It’s nothin' without a master.” So says Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in the trailer for the Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) film, in which she'll reprise the role of Harley Quinn from 2016's Suicide Squad.
And, as she points out, she no longer is affiliated with her more famous ex-boyfriend/master. “The Joker and I broke up. I wanted a fresh start. But it turns out I wasn’t the only dame in Gotham looking for emancipation.” And soon we meet Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), the Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smolett-Bell).
The trailer also introduces Ewan McGregor as Gotham City crime lord Black Mask.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has remained interconnected -- Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy occupy the same universe -- DC has decided that that level of synergy doesn't work for them. So the Joker who Harley broke up with isn't the same Joker who is played by Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming Joker film. Black Canary in the film has no connection to the Black Canary in the CW's Arrow.
Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) will open on February 7, 2020. Watch the trailer below.
