Read This Crazy Fan Theory About ‘Toy Story’ Origins
Most 90’s kids understand that heartbreak that is the Toy Story Franchise.
For some, we grew up and went to college at the same time as Andy. For others, we fell in love with the characters. Regardless of what makes you emotional about the movie, there are still a few unanswered questions about the series. One of which is about Andy’s dad.
Fans everywhere have been pondering about why Andy was raised by a single mom. Mike Mozart, a toy designer asked his friend Jos Ranft, a Pixar writer about the lead character’s father. A.V. Club reports that Woody was originally owned by Andy’s dad, who’s name is also Andy. Sadly, he contracted polio and had to have his toys burned to prevent spreading the disease. Only one box was saved by the fire and it just so happened to contain Woody.
Mozart continued to reveal on the web series Super Carlin Brothers that “Andy’s father calls Andy over to his bedside, giving him a key from his wallet and telling him to go bring down a chest in the attic. Andy heads up there and grabs the chest, but by the time he returns downstairs…his father is dead. Andy forgets about the chest and the key, only to open it after the funeral. Woody, Slinky, and Mr. Potato Head wake up from their slumber, see Andy Jr., and believe he’s the kid they grew up with all those years ago. They don’t know their original owner is dead; Andy lives on in his son.”
We are not crying, we just have water in our eyes!
However, as amazing as this back story would be, it is unfortunately false. Pixar writer and director Andrew Stanton revealed on Twitter that this conspiracy theory was “fake news”. He tweeted that this story was “Complete and utter fake news. Everyone go back to your homes. Nothing to see here, folks #Iwasthere”. Stanton was a part of the screenplay writing process and never heard of the backstory until these recent reports.

Regardless of this being fake, it was a creative way to spice up a legendary animation… But it would be great if maybe they’d tell us the real story of Andy’s dad, instead of just debunking!
