5 Thoughts We Had While Watching Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler’s ‘Snow White’ Trailer
In case you’re not among the 4.8 million who viewed the trailer for Disney’s 2025 live-action Snow White, you might want to watch it first before continuing with this post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV46TJKL8cU Disney’s Snow White | Official Trailer Now that you’ve seen it, let’s unpack this trailer. 1. The people were divided about Rachel Zegler's Casting as Snow White Rachel Zegler's casting as Snow White generated controversy and backlash. In a conversation with Halle Bailey for Variety's Actor on Actor series (via The Independent) Zegler said she feels, "So thankful for those moments because they make me feel like solid Teflon." Bailey, who played Ariel in the live action film The Little Mermaid was subjected to the same controversy. Critics have also been breathing down her neck ever since she said the movie would have a different take on the classic love story. She was criticized and accused of disrespecting the original movie. In an interview with Variety (via USA Today), Zegler said, "It's no longer 1937," and Snow White is "not going to be saved by the prince." 2. Her singing is awesome though Despite the backlash, there's no denying her singing prowess. Zegler, who got her break in Steven Spielberg’s musical adaptation of West Side Story playing Maria, is obviously an awesome singer. She again showed her talent as Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and in her Broadway debut as Juliet in Romeo + Juliet. 3. The CGI dwarves are what nightmares are made of Seriously, the dwarves are scary. As a billion-dollar company, Disney surely could have splurged for better animation or better yet, they could have hired people of short stature. After all, they claim to be “welcoming to all.” 4. Gal Gadot’s accent is not as thick as before Gadot’s accent is less noticeable than it was before. We don’t mind, but as Screen Junkies pointed out in its Honest Trailer for Wonder Woman, it’s unsettling to watch a character with an accent that’s noticeably different from those of other characters who are supposedly from the same place. 5. Andrew Burnap’s role is confusing As reported by Screen Rant, Burnap is cast as the male lead but not as the prince charming or the huntsman. But in the trailer, it’s obvious he is Snow White’s love interest. Creating a new character might be the studio’s way of retelling the story (although in the trailer, they did mention “The Classic Story Comes to Life.”) Zegler said via The Wrap, “We have a different approach to what I’m sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie, Andrew Burnap, great dude. It’s one of those things that I think everyone’s going to have their assumptions about what it’s going to be, but it’s really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful.” However, deviating so much from the classic is risky. 2020’s live-action Mulan came to mind. The film made the mistake of stripping away everything fans loved about the animated classic—and, well, we all know how that turned out. It flopped hard. Hopefully Snow White won't have the same fate.
