One way to be called "the cat's meow" is to show up as a literal cat at the Met Gala. That's exactly what Doja Cat, Jared Leto, and Lil Nas X did on Monday night (May 1). The stars' looks may have had viewers wondering why they showed up as felines, but it was actually a tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, whom the event's theme was modeled after.

When the designer died at the age of 85 in 2019 due to pancreatic cancer, he left much of his estate to his beloved white Burmese cat, Choupette. The cat even has its own social media accounts and has become a social media sensation. Though the cat didn't make a guest appearance at the 2023 Met Gala, there were plenty of shoutouts to her on the red carpet.

Jared Leto came out in a full 6-foot-tall fursuit with hyperrealistic blue eyes, terrifying Lizzo on the red carpet. No one knew it was him until he tore off the head. Then, Doja Cat arrived in an Oscar de la Renta dress with diamond hooded cat ears and cat face prosthetics, giving a whole new meaning to her name. She even replied only in "meows" when interviewed by Emma Chamberlain. Finally, Lil Nas X went avante-garde in a full-body crystallized cat look created by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath. His bejeweled mask and long, razor-sharp claws added to his fiercely feline look. He also replied in "meows" when asked about his Met Gala look.

2023 Met Gala Red Carpet Disasters and Triumphs

Fashion's hottest night of the year is back. The 2023 Met Gala took place Monday night (May 1). This year's event pays tribute to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, who was  the creative director of the French fashion house Chanel. The exclusive event is intended to honor the iconic fashion designer, who passed away in 2019 from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Lagerfeld helmed some of the most recognizable fashion houses in the world (Chloé and Fendi) in his 65 years in fashion. Attendees are required to honor Karl's fashion influence, which is wide open to interpretation, given his long and varied career that spans various luxury brands and eras of fashion (from the 1950s to his last collection in 2019).

The lineup includes longtime Chanel collaborator Penélope Cruz, actress and writer Michaela Coel, singer Dua Lipa and tennis legend Roger Federer. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who had a close friendship with the designer, was there as always.

"Karl was so much more than our greatest and most prolific designer," Anna said in a statement after Karl's passing. "His creative genius was breathtaking and to be his friend was an exceptional gift. Karl was brilliant, he was wicked, he was funny, he was generous beyond measure, and he was deeply kind. I will miss him so very much."

See below which stars honored Karl's legacy and the ones who have him rolling in his grave from their bad fashion choices.

Worst: Roger Federer and Mirka Federer

GettyImages-1486913079.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The tennis legend's wife added one feather too many to this baby pink ensemble and looks like a plucked chicken.

Worst: Emma Chamberlain

GettyImages-1486916566.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

The internet personality's sequined undershirt and white calf socks turn this powder blue look to be a cheesy one.

Worst: Cara Delevingne

GettyImages-1486933385.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

The model's silver hair looks completely fried, her top looks like a tablecloth, and we don't understand the reason for the thigh-high leg sleeves...

Worst: Jared Leto

GettyImages-1486928396.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Known for doing something unnecessarily dramatic at each Met Gala, the actor wore a giant catsuit. Just goofy.

Worst: Emily Blunt

GettyImages-1486925034.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

It's a sad day when Emily Blunt is not one of our best dressed. This Marc Jacobs look is busy, boring, and does nothing for her figure.

Worst: Ariana DeBose

GettyImages-1486915146.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Though the citrine color is lovely on her complexion, the utility-style fur-trimmed jacket is so busy and doesn't match the elegance of her fishtail skirt.

Worst: Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin

GettyImages-1486915789.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The designers looked chaotic despite wearing only black and white.

Worst: Rami Malek

GettyImages-1486919445.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Unfortunately for the actor, we can easily mistake him for being someone's butler at the fashion event.

Worst: Ben Platt

GettyImages-1486919317.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The actor also looked like the help, but fabulous with chain detailing.

Worst: Jenna Ortega

GettyImages-1486931140.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The 'Wednesday' star's outfit is just too busy. Her hair being down does not help trying to figure out what is going on: from her oxford heels, to her shin socks, layered tweed gown and collared bow.

Worst: Sydney Sweeney

GettyImages-1486922021.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The actress went for a sweet style, but it is so boring and the black bow at her knee doesn't make it look any better.

Worst: Kendall Jenner

GettyImages-1486931211.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Kendall's collared, sequined bodysuit proves that being a model doesn't guarantee good fashion choices. She looked like she was attending a superhero film's red carpet.

Worst: A$AP Rocky

GettyImages-1486954682.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The rapper looks like he got dressed in the dark and accidentally grabbed RihRih's skirt. Not sure what he was thinking here, but sometimes more is just too much.

Worst: David Byrne

GettyImages-1486914294.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

In all-white as per usual, the eccentric singer-songwriter accessorized with a bright pair of sneakers and a bike!

Worst: Serena Williams

GettyImages-1486929848.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Serena's top half of her gown is too structured and boxy that it doesn't flatter her figure.

Worst: James Corden and Julia Carey

GettyImages-1486916906.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

James' blue blazer makes it look like he's attending a gender reveal party. His wife Julia does look stunning though.

Worst: Lea Michele

GettyImages-1486927617.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Though the actress' hair and face are gorgeous, we don't like the bow on her very rigid silver gown.

Worst: Ice Spice

GettyImages-1486917316.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Though her camera prop is cute, the rapper played it safe with a white gown with nude stripings.

Worst: Olivia Wilde

GettyImages-1486915783.jpgTheo Wargo/Getty Images for Karl Lagerfeld

Olivia wore this remake of an 80s Chanel dress and this Cleopatra look and arm bands make everything look too costume-y.

Worst: Idris Elba and Sabrina Dhowre Elba

GettyImages-1486931011.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Never would we have ever thought Idris would make out worst dressed list, yet here we are, and his wife is there to join him. We don't like the shape of his long blazer, and his wife joins him with her puffed skirt.

Worst: Kim Kardashian

GettyImages-1486931116.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Kim's outfit feels incomplete with what looks to be shapewear covered by pearls.

Worst: Bad Bunny

GettyImages-1486932169.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The all-white suit and rose train was quite boring coming from the rapper, who we usually anticipate bright and bold looks.

Worst: Christina Ricci

GettyImages-1486929513.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Though we love the actress' purse, her gown is looking a little too much like the Tin Man from 'The Wizard of Oz.'

Worst: Vanessa Hudgens

GettyImages-1486927518.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The bows on her gown and the shoes the actress wore were very boring and not memorable. We wish she took a bigger risk with her look tonight.

Worst: Quinta Brunson

GettyImages-1486914144.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Though the gown is so gorgeous and dainty, Quinta's small stature gets swallowed with the long gown and train.

Worst: Margot Robbie

GettyImages-1486922150.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Though we appreciate a fresh face, Margot's red carpet look was lackluster. We were expecting more pizzazz from the 'Barbie' star, and this black gown with a clear corset was pretty boring.

Worst: Penélope Cruz

GettyImages-1486910864.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Though she looks stunning, the actress' white gown and veil is too much like a wedding dress.

Worst: Jessica Chastain

GettyImages-1486922858.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Unrecognizable as a blonde, the actress shed away her unique look for something much more boring.

Best: Usher

GettyImages-1486920509.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

The singer elevated his simple suit with pops of white and jewels in his shoes and undershirt. Also, that giant rock on his pinky sticks out even more with his leather gloves.

Best: Lizzo

GettyImages-1486927752.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The singer didn't take any risks this time around, but we love the pearl-adorned gown she wore to the event.

Best: Naomi Campbell

GettyImages-1486917481.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Wearing Chanel couture from 2010, Naomi stuns in this soft pink asymmetrical dress with that pop of sequins.

Best: Letitia Wright

GettyImages-1486924529.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The actress well all out for this masculine look, with this structured suit, square purse, and buzzed cut.

Best: Stormzy

GettyImages-1486930409.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The rapper's blue and black rose suit set him apart from the rest of the attendees.

Best: Trevor Noah

GettyImages-1486928041.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

We are loving Trevor's new hairstyle and his velvet blazer with bedazzled black polka-dot detailing.

Best: Dr. Dre

GettyImages-1486925177.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

We were surprised to the see the iconic producer at the fashion event, and we love how chic he looked with this black and blue patterned shirt and tie!

Best: Simu Liu

GettyImages-1486932370.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The actor looked so edgy with the patent leather gloves and glimmering accessories.

Best: Maluma

GettyImages-1486929045.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The singer rocked a sleeveless grey suit with a white scarf, showing off his sexy tattooed arms.

Best: Russell Westbrook

GettyImages-1486927765.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The Clippers' point guard rocked a white tweed jacket with a pearl necklace and funky-patterned pants.

Best: Pete Davidson

GettyImages-1486930821.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

Surprisingly, the comedian's Met Gala look is really cool! We love how he paired his long jacket with a bucket hat and added a pop of color with hie tie-dye shirt.

Best: Glenn Close

GettyImages-1486926824.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The actress kept things light: from her hair color, to her dusty teal train. She looks elegant and can still keep up with the train trends, showing that style does not age.

Best: Elle Fanning

GettyImages-1486930834.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

We love the incorporation of the flower bouquet with her lace gown and matching flower hairpiece.

Best: Taika Waititi

GettyImages-1486911473.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

We'll call this look "sleepy chic" with white satin pants and a silk grey overcoat with black and pearl trimmings.

Best: Amanda Seyfried

GettyImages-1486920436.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

The actress went full flapper mode with this draped gold and nude dress.

Best: Pusha T

GettyImages-1486924763.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The rapper kept things funky with his alternating patterns on his suit and pants.

Best: Phoebe Bridgers

GettyImages-1486912676.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

The singer's intricate, beaded corset is both edgy and glam. We love how the straps drape onto her arms.

Best: Emily Ratajkowski

GettyImages-1486912473.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The supermodel wore a blunt bang with her nude and black gown. The criss-crossing on her torso looks stunning on her.

Best: Ke Huy Quan

GettyImages-1486929249.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The actor looked snazzy channeling his inner Lagerfeld with the iconic fingerless gloves and a really cool brooch on his tie.

Best: Rita Ora

GettyImages-1486916386.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

This black dress incorporates many different fabrics and we love how she matched her choker to the floral applique on her shoulder.

Best: Michelle Yeoh

GettyImages-1486930927.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The actress perfectly layered black and white in this structured gown with billowing sleeves.

Best: Chloe Fineman

GettyImages-1486906356.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

The actress looked adorable in this glittering pink gown, black rose detailing at the bust.

Best: Gisele Bündchen

GettyImages-1486919503.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

As her first red carpet event as a single woman, the supermodel looked stunning in this vertical-striped gown and feathered cape, reminiscent of her Victoria's Secret days.

Best: Stephanie Hsu

GettyImages-1486937917.jpgMike Coppola/Getty Images

We love the gradient sequin collared gown the actress paired with a chic, black and white makeup look.

The singer brought ALL the drama with these platform, glittering black and silver booties and matching color scheme of her gown.

Giving us a much-needed break from white and black outfits, the actor paired a muted teal frilled top with a satin brown overcoat.

Best: Rachel Brosnahan

GettyImages-1486923134.jpgJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

With the exception of her embroidered breasts, the actress' simple look accentuates her figure beautifully.

Best: Kerry Washington

GettyImages-1486925287.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

The gorgeous actress knows how to pull off sexy and elegant, being a fashion icon at any event she attends. The lace and tulle mermaid skirt is enchanting in contrast to her sleek hairstyle and blazer.

Best: Pedro Pascal

GettyImages-1486938390.jpgTheo Wargo/Getty Images for Karl Lagerfeld

Daddy took a fashion risk and it paid off, as he showed his legs off with black shorts, he paired the top half of his body with a bold red coat.

Best: Kylie Jenner

GettyImages-1486931155.jpgDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Best: Keke Palmer

Best: Suki Waterhouse and Robert Pattinson
