Hey, Joel here. Summer might be winding down and school may be back in session, but with Labor Day weekend approaching, there’s still time to enjoy a freeze pop by the pool! So which flavor are you grabbing? If you listened to Joel and Maryann in the Morning recently you heard that we hosted a debate on Magic 98.3, but before we reveal the winner let’s talk about how this discussion began.
The team at Shane Co. wanted to know more about the summertime staple. They surveyed more than two thousand freeze pop-loving Americans on flavor preferences, terminology, adding alcohol, and much more including each state’s freeze pop preference.
There are so many different names for freeze pops, among those popping up in the survey were popsicle, freeze pop, otter pop, freezer pop, ice pop, freezie pop, or freezie. I think they covered all of them, if your preference was left out let us know. Each region refers to the icy treats differently. New Jersey’s favorite terminology is ice pop. New Yorkers call them freeze pops, those in PA prefer freeze pop as well, and Connecticut agrees with New Jerseyans with ice pop. For the other state’s faves go here. The majority of states in the Northeast call them Freeze Pops.
Now, what about the flavors? New Jersey says that Blue Raspberry is the best. Surprisingly, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut all agree. In fact, blue raspberry is the most popular flavor across the country with more than thirty states in agreement.
So, did Maryann and I agree?

We rarely do and we didn’t when it comes to our favorite freezer pop flavor. Maryann loves the grape, and grape was the favorite flavor in only two states, Nevada and Washington. I usually go for orange. It’s most refreshing and it’s least noticeable when it comes to changing the color of your lips and mouth. Orange was the top pick in just one state, Indiana. Ironically, Hoosiers is my favorite movie! WOW!
Check out the full report here which includes which type of alcohol we like to add to our freezer pops.
It should be noted that six states were not included due to the lack of survey respondents.
