Growing up in England, Sheeran showed he was musically inclined from a young age. He sang at a local church choir at the age of four, learned how to play the guitar at age eleven, played the cello, and began writing songs in high school. A 2004 school report described him as a “natural performer” and his classmates also voted him “most likely to be famous.”
Sheeran began recording music in 2004, and at 13 years old, he independently released his first collection of work, titled Spinning Man. Written about his first love and heartbreak, he previously said he did not want anyone to “get hold of a copy” of the CD and owns 19 of the 20 total himself.
After gaining popularity through YouTube, his fan base expanded. His debut album + was released in September 2011 and featured his first hit single, “The A Team.” Sheeran’s successful second studio album, × released a few years later in 2014. ÷ was released in 2017 and was the best-selling album worldwide of that year. = was released just two years ago and topped the charts in most major markets. Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists.
