Participate in the Fourth Annual New Brunswick Juneteenth Parade and Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 15th.
The parade starts from George Street and Remsen Avenue, ending at Pine Street Park. The festival will be held at Pine Street Park (at the end of Nichol Avenue on the Douglass Campus).
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of emancipation in the United States. Today Juneteenth both commemorates freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. The celebration in New Brunswick was initiated four years ago by the Vulcan Pioneers (the Black Firefighters of New Brunswick) who remain the event’s creative force. It has quickly grown to be a community-wide event with this year’s parade featuring African and Caribbean/Latinadad drumming, a marching band, dancers, elected officials and community members.
