Shannen Doherty Will Help ‘Riverdale’ Pay Tribute To Luke Perry
The upcoming season premiere of Riverdale will honor the late Luke Perry. And Riverdale‘s tribute to Perry will feature his 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty.
Doherty’s cameo in the season 4 premiere will be an emotional one, according to Entertainment Tonight, that celebrates her longtime friend, who died in March from complications following a stroke. The two played on-again-off-again couple Dylan and Brenda on the ’90s teen series. But, the two stayed friends long after the series ended.
“Luke and Shannen were really, really good friends,” Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told ET. “Luke had talked to me on and off over the years about trying to find something for Shannen on the show and when we were putting together this special episode, we kind of wanted to include special people from Luke’s life.”
Aguirre-Sacasa saif Doherty will play “a very emotional, important role” in the premiere. “We sent the script to Shannen and she read it and loved it and said, ‘I want to do it,'” he said. “So it’s about honoring their friendship a little bit.” Doherty, he added, was “really moved when she read the script and immediately said yes.”
Over the weekend, Doherty celebrated the news of her casting on Instagram. “I am deeply honored to pay tribute to Luke on Riverdale. The care in which this show takes in honoring his memory is beautiful,” she wrote. “He is missed. Today. Tomorrow. Forever.”
Season 4 of Riverdale returns on Oct. 9.
