Central Jersey's first Bass Pro Shop will open this spring at the Riverton development off the Garden State Parkway in Sayreville, according to a report on Patch.com. The hunting and fishing store will anchor the project.

QuickChek and Starbucks are also set to open at the location. Mayor Kennedy O'Brien said last year that the town hall may move there. New Jersey's only other Bass Pro Shop sits in Atlantic City.

The project occupies what was once the National Lead site at 1000 Chevalier Ave., off the Driscoll Bridge exit. Crews broke ground on the 418-acre site in January 2025.

Plans call for 1,300 housing units — apartments and townhomes — built around a central green at the mouth of the Raritan River. A 200-slip marina will accommodate motorboats and sailboats.

State officials required 20% of housing units to be affordable. That was a condition for tax breaks. The site will also have parks, nature trails, and a waterfront boardwalk open to everyone.

Waterfront dining and shops will join office and tech spaces. A 440-room hotel is also planned.

Cincinnati-based North American Properties is working with PGIM Real Estate, the global investment arm of Prudential bank, to build it. The developers said two years ago the project couldn't happen without state financing.

New Jersey provided tax breaks of up to 50% of project costs in 2023. That totals up to $400 million. The breaks came under the state's Aspire Program, which aims to increase affordable housing.
