Somerset County launched a fare-free shuttle on Nov. 7. The new route links Lyons Train Station with the Lyons VA Medical Center in Bernards Township. More than 50 riders used it during the first two weeks.

The Veterans Lyons Shuttle brings together Somerset County, NJ TRANSIT, the Lyons VA Medical Center, and the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. NJ TRANSIT supplied grant money. The county runs the buses.

Officials said the route fills a "first- and last-mile" gap, connecting veterans with the regional rail network and the VA facility. This ensures that lack of transportation won't stop veterans from getting to their appointments at the campus.

Buses roll Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each day brings about eight loops that match the Morris & Essex Line timetable.

Each vehicle holds 16 passengers. Two wheelchair securement stations are built in. The buses meet ADA accessibility standards.

"We are so pleased to be able to carry our veterans those last few miles," officials said in a statement. "They've served us all so heroically — now we're honored to serve them."

The program is part of a bigger push across New Jersey to build better transportation choices for veterans by bringing together state and local agencies. County leaders want residents to share news about the service with veterans who live nearby.

Data from the opening weeks will guide decisions about adding new routes or stretching hours if needed. Veterans and their families can reach out to Somerset County Transportation Services or check the county's website for schedules and rider details.
